About the role
Search no longer ends on a page of blue links. Buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, and they get one answer built from a handful of sources. We want our clients to be those sources, and to keep ranking in the classic results too.
Windmark designs and builds websites for brands across industries, from SaaS and fintech to defence and clean-tech. This role makes sure those sites get found. You will run advanced SEO for client sites and for Windmark itself: technical audits, entity and schema work, content strategy, and the newer work of earning visibility in AI answers.
It is a freelance role, scoped per engagement. We care about judgment more than activity. Fifty closed tickets matter less than the three changes that moved qualified leads, and we want someone who can tell which three those are.
You work directly with the founder, our designers and our Webflow developers, so your recommendations get built quickly instead of sitting in a deck.
What you will do
Technical SEO at depth
- Audit crawling, indexing and rendering on Webflow, Framer, WordPress and headless builds, including JavaScript rendering and what AI crawlers actually see.
- Read server logs and crawl data to see where Googlebot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot spend their time, and fix what wastes it.
- Own redirects, canonicals, hreflang, sitemaps, robots rules and llms.txt through redesigns and migrations, so traffic survives launch day.
- Improve Core Web Vitals with developers, prioritised by real field data, not lab scores.
Entity SEO and structured data
- Build clear entity signals for brands, people, services and products with Organization, Person, Service, Article and FAQ schema.
- Connect those entities across the site, knowledge panels, Wikidata and the third-party profiles AI systems rely on.
- Validate markup and catch drift before it costs rich results or citations.
AI search visibility (AEO and GEO)
- Track how clients appear across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and which competitors get cited instead.
- Restructure key pages so passages are easy to extract and quote: answer-first sections, clear definitions, tables, and claims backed by data.
- Find the sources AI engines trust in each category, such as review sites, directories, communities and publications, and build a plan to earn mentions there.
- Test what actually moves citations and drop the tactics that don't. We want evidence, not hype.
Content strategy and topical authority
- Research search and prompt demand across informational, commercial and transactional intent, then map it to pages.
- Design topic clusters and internal linking that build authority without publishing for the sake of it.
- Write briefs that writers can follow and that answer the questions buyers ask, in their own words.
- Fix cannibalisation, consolidate thin pages and refresh decaying content before commissioning anything new.
Programmatic and AI-assisted SEO
- Plan and QA programmatic page sets, such as locations, integrations and comparisons, that add real value on every page and stay clear of thin content.
- Use AI tools and scripts (Python, Apps Script, APIs) to speed up research, clustering, briefs and audits, with human review on everything that ships.
Authority building
- Earn links and mentions through digital PR, data-led content, partnerships and relevant publications.
- Review backlink profiles and flag risky patterns. No link schemes, no PBNs.
Measurement and reporting
- Set up and read Search Console, GA4 and Looker Studio, including AI referral traffic and conversions from organic.
- Report monthly on what shipped, what moved, what it means for leads, and what comes next.
What we are looking for
- 4+ years of hands-on SEO, with case studies that show measurable results for business websites.
- Deep technical SEO. You can debug rendering, read server logs and explain a canonical conflict to a developer.
- Real work in AI search. You have tracked a brand's AI citations, changed something that improved them, and can show the numbers.
- Schema and entity SEO beyond plugin defaults.
- Daily use of Ahrefs or Semrush, Screaming Frog or Sitebulb, Search Console and GA4.
- Experience with Webflow or a similar CMS, and enough HTML, CSS and JavaScript to know exactly what you are asking developers for.
- Clear written English. You will explain trade-offs to clients in the US, UK and Europe.
- You manage your own time and deliverables remotely and raise blockers early.
Nice to have
- Python or SQL for data work, or experience with the Search Console and Ahrefs APIs.
- AI visibility tools such as Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound, Peec AI or Otterly.
- International SEO and hreflang for multi-market sites.
- Experience with SaaS, fintech, professional services or other B2B websites.
- Migrations of large CMS-based sites.
- Published writing or talks on SEO or AI search.
What you will deliver
Each engagement has its own scope. Typical deliverables include:
- An SEO and AI visibility audit, with a baseline of rankings, traffic and AI citations.
- A prioritised roadmap ranked by impact and effort.
- Keyword and prompt research mapped to pages.
- Technical fixes and schema specs ready for developers, plus QA once they ship.
- Content briefs and page-level optimisation for priority pages.
- A competitor and citation gap analysis.
- Monthly reports covering work done, results, insights and next steps.
How we measure success
We agree targets at the start of each engagement, after reviewing the site, its competitors and the resources available. Depending on the project, that can include:
- Growth in non-branded organic visibility and qualified traffic to key pages.
- More citations and mentions in AI answers for priority topics.
- More leads and conversions from organic search and AI referrals.
- Critical technical issues resolved, and kept resolved.
- Recommendations shipped on time, with clear evidence of what they changed.
When you apply, include two or three case studies with numbers, and one example of improving a brand's visibility in AI search: what you changed and how you measured it.
